Puzzle Pieces: Returning to Normal Life After the AT

I was recently struck by a quote from former Appalachian Trail thru hiker and author Cindy Ross. “Returning home is the most difficult part of long-distance hiking. You have grown outside the puzzle and your piece no longer fits.” This rings true to my post-hike life. This entry is as much an update as an […]

Living in Montana is complicated. On the one hand, you get amazing views like this (went on a company rafting trip, thanks for a perfect day and your allyship @tamarackcannabis.mt )
Hiking season is here!! Time to play in the mountains 🥹⛰
Sunset boat ride with some coworkers, celebrating the end of the busy summer tourism season.
My favorite season to hike! Crisp air, the best colors, fewer people on trails during the week. This was my first 8+ mile solo hike in months. I sang and danced. AHHH FALLL!!
Squeezing in a bit more lake swimming before the water gets too cold. We ate lunch on this ledge about 15 ft above the lake. Some people came to fly fish, and one guy jumped into the lake, super close to the rocks. All I could think about was the beginning of A Walk to Remember, but good for him.
I took my partner David on his first overnight backpacking trip! His first time wearing a full pack, filtering water, hanging food from a tree, and sleeping near a tucked away mountain lake. We hiked about 11 miles each day in 90+ degree sunshine with consistent elevation change. He was such a sweaty trooper! I probably could have picked an easier first overnight…..but I mean these views 🤩🏔❤️
